ITENO (2019)

ITENO is a number puzzle game, designed to make calculation fun. It is a free-to-play mobile game where you link numbered balls to add them up to a multiple of 10. Each level features different quirky challenges that keep the journey exciting. The game was also awarded the SEA Game Awards under the category: "Audience Choice Award" 2018.​

MY contributions

My main role was to design and implement all the levels required for the game. I was also assigned to design some of the new obstacles

Level design​

I designed and implemented the first 300 levels of ITENO. We wanted the focus to be more on the fun and avoid scenarios that require overly complex calculations. Therefore, I emphasised building creative layouts and balanced the numbers generated on the balls accordingly. For example: A level with a challenging layout would be balanced by only generating even-numbered balls, making it easier to add into a multiple of 10.

As a small team, we would collectively plan the locations and visual themes of levels.​

OBSTACLE DESIGN

As the team's sole designer, I also took on other game designer responsibilities such as designing and proposing some of the new obstacles for Iteno. The basic objectives usually involve "collecting X number of certain balls within X number of moves" but that would become too repetitive. Thus, these obstacles were also made to modify challenges and can sometimes become part of the goal, offering much more variety in gameplay.

Some obstacles designed by me:

The Shifters

There are 3 types of shifters: the Flower, the Leaf and the Bug. They change whenever players make a move. The Flower's number reduces by 1, the Leaf changes to a random number, and the Bug changes its colour.​​​​

Spiders and Webs

A Web can bind a ball in place, causing it to be static, which can sometimes become part of the obstacle. Players need to link the webbed balls to remove the Web layers. Once all the layers are cleared, that ball will regain its physics and can be linked again.

If there are Spiders on the level, they will jump to a nearby ball after every move and create more Webs. The Spiders can be destroyed by linking around them thrice.​​​​​

Zombies

Like the movies, a Zombie will convert a nearby ball into another Zombie after each move. A zombie cannot be linked, which means that if the spread is ignored for too long, more and more balls will be rendered useless. However, they can be destroyed by linking around them thrice.​​​​​​

TUTORIALS​

I designed the tutorial for first-time users and for every level that introduces a new obstacle, before working with the team to implement the necessary assets. ​​
